Grief Counseling
What is grief counseling?
Grief counseling (or bereavement counseling depending on the loss) is a specialized form of therapy that is designed to help support individuals who have experienced a significant loss. This therapeutic approach helps individuals navigate the complex emotions and challenges that come with grieving. The goal is to provide a space for expressing emotions, processing the loss, and finding ways to grow around your grief.
What is grief?
Grief is a natural and multifaceted response to a loss. Examples of a loss could be:
The death of a loved one (a child, parent, partner, friend, pet)
Miscarriage, stillbirth, infertility
Loss of a relationship, friendship, job, sense of self
Physical/Emotional trauma
Grief can elicit a wide range of emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt and confusion. Grief can also manifest physically, mentally and socially, impacting your overall well-being. Grief is not a linear process where you can predict the next step. Everyone expresses their grief differently - there is no right or wrong way to grieve.
Bereaved Parents/Caregivers
The death of a child is one of the most devastating losses a parent/caregiver can experience. The pain and grief that follow are profound, complicated, and often feel insurmountable. The loss of a child can impact every aspect of a parent/caregiver’s life, from daily routines to long term dreams.
Finding a therapist who can hold the intense grief/sadness/anger/guilt/confusion you feel can be an important step in navigating the ebbs and flows of your grief. Grief has no timeline.
What to expect in grief counseling sessions
In our sessions together, you can expect a warm and supportive environment where you can show up just as you are. Each session is tailored to your specific needs - your grief is not a standalone piece of yourself that needs to be “fixed”. Grief is impacted by all the different aspects of your life, your upbringing and how you function in the world. My hope is to be able to help support you in growing around your grief, developing tools to help you cope and living your life in alignment with your hopes and values.
There is no time limit on the grieving process. Grief counseling can be helpful days to many years after a loss. There is no right or wrong way to grieve.
